New York Baycol Injury AttorneysBaycol, the brand name of cerivastatin, is a cholesterol lowering drug commonly referred to as a "statin". Statins lower cholesterol levels by blocking a specific enzyme in the body involved in the synthesis of cholesterol. Manufactured by Bayer Corporation, the drug was initially approved for the US market in 1997. The use of Baycol has been linked to a rare condition called "rhabdomyolysis", which is a condition that results in cell breakdown. In some cases, the condition is so severe that patients develop renal failure and other organ failure, which can be fatal. Symptoms of this rare disease include muscle pain, weakness, fever, dark urine, nausea and vomiting. While all statins present risk of rhabdomyolysis, cases of death in association with Baycol have been reported significantly more than for other approved statins such as Mevacor, Pravacor, Zocor or Lipitor - at least 31 deaths in the United States. Bayer Pharmaceutical has withdrawn Baycol from the market and the FDA is urging Baycol users to immediately consult their doctor. |
